Rome Book III scrapbook image

Rome Book III
Rome, Italy
ca. 1980s
The writer has collaged an Eridiana sugar packet — emptied — over a sketch of the Castello Caterina, a monastery at the edge of the Greco-Roman theater in Taormina, and thumbnails of Art Deco tombs in the cemetery at Mazzaro, a beach town down the mountain from Taormina. At this time, Eridiana sugar was reproducing art masterpieces on individual packets.

From the collection of Elatia Harris.

Parents should have their children see Elatia's scrapbooks before they embark on their journeys so that they learn to "see" all that is before them. What an artist!

Oh, the power of these wonderous images to evoke memory of past travels! I'm heading straight to the local boulagerie and taking my sketchbook with me. Thank you Elatia for your lovely and inspiring works.

These pages are so amazing....one should be able to draw when in Italy, but alas, most travelers can't sketch with the precision of Ms. Elatia Harris!

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
