Rome Book IV scrapbook image

Rome Book IV
Rome, Italy
ca. 1980s
This page reflects the writer/collagist's dilemma — representing posters she would have liked to have torn off walls for her commonplace book, but could not, because they were still current. That year (1983) in Palermo there were two large exhibitions — one of paintings by Antonello da Messina, another to mark the centenary of Karl Marx's death — promoted all over town not by individual posters but by sequences of five posters. The writer notes that the sequences of Marx posters were rarely vandalized while those of Antonello's Madonna frequently were, and draws thumbnails.

Another gem. I love having these just keep appearing on the site, bubbling up from the past but as fresh and engaging as they were when you made them years ago.

Elatia - you never cease to amaze me! These extracts from your scrapbooks are extraordinary. I am still puzzling over the razor blade and pink lips from the hotels.... you will have to explain those to me sometime! I can't wait for Sonali to enjoy these excerpts as she sets off for her first encounter with Italy AND after she just began to seriously scrapbook this summer!
Thanks for sharing this with us,
Lakshmi

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
