Rome Book V scrapbook image

Rome Book V
Rome, Italy
ca. 1980s
The writer collaged restaurant receipts, bar bills, coasters, and cafe napkins, and also logged the lunches and dinners consumed. This dinner of February 25, 1983, took place at Il Cantinone, a Sardinian restaurant in Rome. It consisted of artichokes, a pasta course with clams; roast suckling pig, broccoli, and Sardinian sweets. The writer has drawn a section of a sweet filled with orange marmalade. A long arrow suggests a climactic entry on the following page (not shown), where the writer has collaged the wrappers of a Sardinian candy called "Rau" — Sardinian dialect for the "sigh" sound.

From the collection of Elatia Harris.

A must-do when on foreign soil that Elatia obeys: jot down every morsel and draught consumed and then add drawings like Da Vinci, if possible. Grazie.

I have fond childhood memories of a restaurant located near Porto Cervo in Sardinia called "Il Cantinone".

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
