Jessica Helfand III
Venice, Italy
2008
Sometimes, I draw on top of things — postcards, candy wrappers — feeling a bit like an actor trying out a role. Beginning this way catapults me into whatever thing I saved: in this case, a sugar wrapper with a Dutch name (and sporting a modern typeface) and a nineteenth century photograph of a group of young men. I pondered the significance (or lack thereof) of finding a Canadian coin in my pocket, having not traveled to Canada for some time, and voiced my skepticism where the design of the Euro sign is concerned. Receipts for trifling things like coffee are standbys, as are tickets and receipts of all kinds: they help to instantly identify the place, the time, the price which will, someday, look really cheap to me, I'm sure. And another Japanese toothpick: the KIMONO!

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
