Porto, Portugal
2008
Porto is an exquisite pearl of a city: part sophisticated urban destination — with a majestic train station, winding streets and bridges, and some of the most compelling industrial typography in Western Europe — and a breathtaking landscape with a rocky coastline. We'd gone to give a lecture, and afterward, our lovely host took us for a glass of wine overlooking the ocean. The sun was setting and my camera was incapable of capturing the beauty of this captivating horizontal divide — between sky and sea, day and night. I drew it hastily in pen; pasted in my luggage tags; and the "buon apetite" napkin with its no-nonsense script, which accompanied our cocktails. The next day, I had a romantic lunch with my husband, in a restaurant where we had no idea what we'd ordered. I drew the steaming soup bowl, and filled many pages of drawings. We sat there — drawing, reading and drinking two full bottles of wine — for nearly three hours.

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
