Weekend at the Cottage scrapbook image

Weekend at the Cottage
Grand Rapids, MI
1929
Cards and tallies from three bridge parties in 1929; an envelope, place card, postcard and toothpick (still in its wrapper) from the Post Tavern in Battle Creek, Michigan, and a playbill from the Apollo Theatre in Chicago are just a few of the items featured in this book: but it is the Western Union telegram dated August 22, 1929 from Lawrence to Eleanor speaking of “a weekend at the cottage!” that pulls focus. On a nearby page is a collage made from a hotel postcard, an airmail envelope, and a silhouetted cutout of an illustrated couple dancing.

I have one of these envelopes, though it's not the air mail design as shown. It's 3.5 x 6.5 plain white. The Post Tavern appears more colorful as the building facade is a brick red. Also, the street traffic has more activity w/ people, cars, horse-drawn carriage, and even a street car. There appears to be a significant design difference in the steeple in the background too.

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
