The Blanchards were a wealthy and prominent family in Natchitoches, which remains the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase Territory. Lydia Blanchard was her class historian and appears, too, to have been a rather accomplished artist, as seen by the copious numbers of drawings and collages in her scrapbook. In addition, she saved articles,
letters, autographs, cartoons, photographs and ephemera, often adding her own embellishments to the pages after she had finished gluing things down. A hand-drawn tennis-net with cut out figures of women swinging rackets is a particularly lively example that uses the entire surface area of a two-page spread.
