Tailoring of the Better Class scrapbook image

Tailoring of the Better Class
Chicago, IL
1921
This scrapbook collages magazine and other material onto the repurposed pages of the J. L. Taylor & Co. catalogue of pure wool fabrics and models for the Fall and Winter Season, 1921-22. We'll be featuring a page from this magnificent album — subtitled "Tailoring of the Better Class" — each day this week. The book measures 16 by 23 inches, and weighs 15 pounds; verso pages showed the wool samples (all removed), recto pages showed the fashion plates. In one of the more colorful and even surrealistic assemblages encountered in this scrapbook, images of fruit share space with random examples of Edwardian men's fashion.

From the collection of John McVey.

Scrapbooks cover A New Book by Jessica Helfand
Coming this fall from Yale University Press

A gorgeous visual history of American scrapbooks and their evolution over two hundred years. 242 pages, 425 photographs printed in full color.

Combining pictures, words, and a wealth of personal ephemera, scrapbook makers preserve on the pages of their books a moment, a day, or a lifetime. Highly subjective, rich in emotional meaning, the scrapbook is a unique and often quirky form of expression in which a person gathers and arranges meaningful materias to create a personal narrative. This richly illustrated book is the first to focus close attention on the history of American scrapbooks—their origins, their makers, their diverse forms, the reasons for their popularity, and their place in American cultural life.
