"Cooking with an outdoor stove is something familiar to me from my own family's camping trips to Buckhorn," writes McVey, referring to that campground in the Angeles Crest mountains separating the Los Angeles Basin from the Mojave Desert. Stacey's shoes won't protect her from the ashy ground around the stove, but would have been just fine at the Mount Wilson Observatory, which they also visited.
